Nicholas-Locke-Optimus-CanadaNicholas Locke has 30 years of fundraising and executive leadership experience in the nonprofit sector. He started his career in the fundraising sector in 1984, in Federal politics, where he was responsible for pan-Canadian party fundraising that included two successful election campaigns. Over the past 20 years he has held executive fundraising positions, primarily in the healthcare sector, in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

In most cases Nicholas joined organizations that were at a very early stage in developing their fundraising capacity, had few resources and so a great need to develop and implement basic fundraising programs; especially the ability to build capacity to secure major gifts and prepare for capital campaigns.

He led a successful $10 million campaign at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. At the BC Cancer Foundation he oversaw a campaign for a new $70 million BC Cancer Agency Research Centre (which opened in 2005) and a $7 million campaign to develop the Deeley Research Centre in Victoria. In Alberta he was responsible for the development and implementation of a $200 million capital campaign readiness plan for a new Calgary Cancer Centre.

In addition to his campaign experience, Nicholas also has a strong history of developing organizational capacity for future sustainable fundraising through the development and implementation of diverse fundraising platforms that engage organizational stakeholders in long-term support.

Nicholas is also a very strong mentor as evidenced by his role at BCIT where he built BC’s only educational fundraising credit course designed to help students develop a thorough understanding of philanthropy in the nonprofit sector, including major gifts and capital campaigns.

Born in London, England Nicholas started his career as a Chartered Accountant before moving to Canada with Price Waterhouse to Toronto. He currently lives in Vancouver with his wife, also a major gift campaign fundraiser in the international sector.
